Bring Instrumenta in before you buy equipment or software. Instrumenta designs the telemetry and real-time system your site needs, manages its purchase and delivery, and commissions it.
- Sold as
- A written proposal after a consultation session: scope, deliverables and fee.
- Result
- A commissioned system that meets the requirement, with a record linking each requirement to the test that confirmed it.
Purpose
Instrumenta starts with the requirement. On a regulated structure, the engineer of record specifies the measurements and how the instruments are installed. A licence may set what is measured, to what standard and where, or your operation may need to understand conditions on site. Instrumenta designs the telemetry and real-time system to meet that requirement, and chooses equipment on the requirement, not the brand. It manages purchase and delivery, then commissions the system against the five SAFER stages.
When it applies
- You have a monitoring requirement from an engineer, a licence or your operation and need a system that meets it.
- Your engineer of record has specified the measurements and locations for a regulated structure, and you need the real-time system delivered.
- Your licence or a regulation specifies what to measure, where and to which standard.
- Your operation needs to understand site conditions, such as water movement.
- Several suppliers are working on your project, and you need someone to manage their work for you.
- You have supplier proposals that need a common basis for comparison.
- Your readings remain in loggers or spreadsheets and do not reach the people who need them.
- Your monitoring data must reach a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system or another platform, or move between platforms.
Scope
| Requirement | Record what must be measured, where, how often and to which standard. Identify the decisions each reading supports and who needs it. Use the engineer's specification, the licence or regulation, or the operation's need. |
| Options | Compare equipment and platforms against the requirement, including the cost of owning and running each. |
| System design | Design telemetry from field devices to receiving systems, including loggers, remote terminal units (RTUs), power supplies, enclosures, and radio, cellular and satellite links. Design data processing, displays and alarms around the specified instruments. |
| Purchasing | Give suppliers a scope they can price, then compare their proposals against stated criteria. |
| Delivery | Manage suppliers and installers during the build, control changes and report progress. |
| Integration | Build and test connections to SCADA and other platforms. Keep each reading's identity, units, time and source intact. |
| Commissioning | Test and record each requirement against Sense, Assess, Forecast, Explain and Respond. Assign an owner to each defect and hand the system to its operating owner. |
| Whole job | On unregulated sites, Instrumenta also specifies the measurements, locations and installation methods where the requirement leaves them open. |
Method
- Establish the requirement with you from the engineer's specification, the licence or regulation, or your operation's need.
- Compare equipment and platform options, then design the system.
- Give suppliers the scope to price and compare their proposals.
- Manage the build, control changes and report progress.
- Commission and hand over the system, then show its users how it works.
Deliverables
- A commissioned system that meets the requirement, with a record linking each requirement to the test that confirmed it.
- The recorded requirement, options comparison and system design.
- A scope suppliers can price, with a comparison of their proposals.
- Build reports covering scope, cost, risks, decisions and changes.
- A handover package covering data ownership, operating owners, access, configuration, maintenance and support.
